JCCC cartoonist nominated for national award

Kelsey Wroten has been nominated for an ACP Cartooning Award for her comic strip Sarcastic Animals.

Kelsey Wroten has been nominated a 2011 ACP Cartooning Award in the category of Best Comic Panel/Strip. Wroten’s strip Sarcastic Animals appears in the The Campus Ledger, the student paper of Johnson County Community College. The awards program is operated by the Associated Collegiate Press.

Wroten is one of five finalists for the award. Her strip was one of more than 200 entries that were submitted for consideration for the Cartooning Awards, which are co-sponsored by Kansas City’s Universal Uclick.

The winner will be announced at the 90th Annual ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Orlando on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. Entries were accepted in two categories: Editorial Cartoon and Cartoon Panel/Strip. The entries were judged on reader impact, community importance, artistic quality, originality, and clarity of message.

Fans flock to Free State Comicon

Hundreds of comics fans attended the Free State Comicon in Lawarence, Kansas, on Saturday. Promoter Craig Klotz and his team managed an event that featured more than 30 special guests and more than 20 vendors for a day of fun.

Event highlights included the first area convention appearance of comics artist Terry Beatty since he moved to the Kansas City metro area this summer. Beatty was surprised to be greeted by a real life cosplay version of his comics character Wild Dog.

The guests included veteran comics creators such as Ande Parks (Green Arrow, Capote in Kansas) and Steve Lightle (Legion of Superheroes, Marvel Comics Presents) as well as newer creators,  webcomics cartoonists, and small press publishers..

Kansas City creators launch new webcomic

There’s Something Happening in Crawford, Kansas is the new webcomic created by Kansas City writer/penciller Mike Sullivan and inker Kelly Bickford.  The ongoing adventure strip took shape at the weekly Drawing Frenzy jam sessions that occur nearly every Saturday at the Crossroads Coffeehouse. You can follow the strip and catch up on Sullivan’s other comics work at his website, www.virtualinfinitycomics.com.

This weekend Sullivan will be appearing at the Free State Comicon in Lawrence, Kansas. The convention is scheduled for September 10th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. It will be held in Building #21 of the Douglas County Fairgrounds at 2110 Harper Street in Lawrence, Kansas. Admission is $3.00.
